The Fool’s Tower (German Version)

Created for The Federal Pathological-Anatomical Museum in the Narrenturm of the Old General Hospital, “The Fool’s Tower” is a historical introduction to the Vienna General Hospital, displaying selections of rare pathologies that the museum houses. This book is comprised of 231 color images, as well as an illustrated portion of the collection with 167 colorful illustrations. “The Fool’s Tower” is part of a collection of books by Ernst Hausner that have become increasingly more difficult to find since going out of print in 1998. This volume features osteological and wet-preserved specimens from the Federal Pathological-Anatomical Museum in Vienna. The origins of this book are based on the real Fool’s Tower that was constructed in 1784 by court architect Isidor Canevale. The cylindrical tower was the first asylum where the so-called insane were housed and treated, rather than being abused by relatives or put on display like animals.
