This phantom hand is made from synthetic bone encased in resin. It was created as promotional material by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and its subsidiary Searle to market their anti-inflammatory medication Celebrex. This piece demonstrates a recent phase of medical history in the use of promotional materials given to doctors as incentives to prescribe their patients specific medications. During this period of promotion, drug-company representatives would visit doctors offices directly, and provide them with samples of drugs, and related memorabilia to familiarize doctors with the uses and benefits of certain medications.
