This is an exploded skull, which is a highly-sought after method of preparing skulls pioneered by French anatomist Edmé François Chauvot de Beauchêne. This skull demonstrates a rare technique of disambiguation, and is prepared by slicing the skull in multiple layers which can be pulled apart to more closely examine the skull.
